S.F. bans bottled water for workers Citing environmental concerns and cost, the mayor says city offices must rely on tap water. From the Associated Press - June 23, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO — Citing environmental concerns, Mayor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order prohibiting city departments from buying bottled water. In a decision announced Thursday, Newsom said the ban would take effect July 1 and extend to all city and county water coolers by Dec. 1. Tony Winnicker, spokesman for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, said Newsom's decision would save taxpayer money and combat global warming. More than 40 million gallons of oil are needed to make the plastic water bottles Americans purchase each year, according to data cited in the mayor's announcement. The news release also cites the environmental effect of transporting and disposing of the bottles, more than a billion of which end up in California's landfills each year. In addition, the mayor says municipal water is often better than bottled. When the ban goes into effect, city and county offices will dispense municipal tap water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. Winnicker said exceptions will be made in cases where potable water is not easily available or poses health concerns. The mayor's ban on bottled water applies to city and county offices unless it is changed by the next administration, said Joe Arellano, Newsom's spokesman. "We're hoping to set the example for the private sector and other cities in getting off the bottle," Winnicker said.

Tana Water Takes Steps to Reduce Carbon Footprint
- Using mains-fed water filters is equivalent to taking 171 cars off the road for a year -

Bracknell, 17 October 2007: Tana Water (UK) Ltd., has announced that it has initiated a carbon rating programme with co2balance.com to help the company to reduce its overall environmental impact and become a “Carbon Zero” company.

To carry out the assessment, co2balance.com considered Tana Water’s carbon emissions from energy consumption in its UK premises; company vehicles; air travel to its supplier; product import and logistics. It then provided advice on the company’s overall environmental policy. Figures were calculated using co2balance’s Business Carbon Calculator against industry benchmarks for energy usage and best practice.

Preliminary findings on Tana Water’s environmental performance are that it is operating efficiently for a business of its size. In order to reduce its carbon emissions, co2balance.com has recommended that the company changes one of its company vehicles for a model with lower environmental impact; reduces heating in the Bracknell warehouse and continues with its import policy, which has a 68 per cent lower carbon footprint than companies shipping in products from farther afield.

According to the co2balance.com report, the majority of water coolers use disposable plastic filters and bottles. Tana Water machines take water directly from the mains and use a combination of 11 Watt ultra violet filtration and carbon filtration which are biodegradable. To further reduce carbon emissions, Tana Water machines also include a power saving mode, delivering power consumption savings of around 40 per cent.

“We are always talking to our customers about how our mains-fed water machines help them to reduce their environmental impact because they don’t require lorry loads of plastic bottles to be delivered and they automatically power down when not in use. So we thought we’d take a look at our own carbon rating to ensure that we are leading by example,” commented Nick Heane, Managing Director, Tana Water UK Ltd. “According to our carbon rating, each year a mains-fed water machine produces 761 Kg less carbon dioxide than a bottled water dispenser that gets through 3 bottles a week. When you multiply this by the number of machines we supply to companies each year, our products reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 684.9 tonnes per year. That’s the equivalent of taking 171 family cars off the road!”

To achieve a Carbon Zero rating, Tana Water has agreed to offset its carbon emissions by funding afforestation programmes in the UK. Unlike other carbon offsetting projects, co2balance.com’s planting programmes are completely financed by offsetting and trees would not otherwise be planted without the involvement of carbon rated companies.

Mark Simpson, Director, co2balance.com said: “We congratulate Tana Water UK in taking the first step towards an holistic environmental policy and improvement strategy. Having commitment and setting key responsibilities from Board Level downwards is key to ensuring that companies continue to reduce their environmental impact by adopting best environmental practices and business procedures.”

About Tana Water (UK) Ltd.,

Tana Water UK Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tana Industries, one of the world’s leading developers and producers of mains-fed water dispensers. Tana has been active in the UK since 1993 and has installed more than 15,000 dispensers in the UK within the private and public sector, including government establishments; domestic environments; educational establishments and healthcare providers.

All Tana dispensers have Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) Approval and only use WRAS approved installation parts, ensuring that our dispensers are suitable to be connected to mains water supplies. To substantially reduce electricity consumption, all new hot & cold Tana dispensers are fitted with a unique energy saving mode to power down machines when not in use and use biodegradable carbon and UV filters.

Tana Water mains-fed machines are 100% recyclable. Used units are returned to our factory and refurbished for use in developing countries. Extending their use in this way considerably reduces waste sent to landfill and reduces the carbon footprint of the dispensers over their lifecycle.

About co2balance Ltd:

co2balance’s aim is to provide a simple, practical and cost-effective way to individuals and businesses of reducing their ‘carbon footprint’ and then balancing their unavoidable carbon dioxide emissions through investment in woodland planting and energy efficiency projects. After providing advice on carbon reduction, co2balance will arrange to offset the residual CO2 emissions.
All of co2balance’s carbon offsetting projects are truly additional, in that they would not otherwise have occurred but for the investment of the funds from their offsetting clients.

Trees that are planting as part of afforestation projects are native broadleafed trees and are planted at co2balance’s own woodland to ensure that they are well managed and under the control of co2balance. When completed and mature, they will be turned into community woodlands.
